The Society of Hispanic Engineers - Celebrating 25 years of success

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the City of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation.

The Society of Hispanic Engineers
The Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHE) is a professional development society. We were founded in1984 by seven Hispanic engineering students, whom felt there was a need for an organization where Hispanic engineering students could meet to address their cultural concerns. The society was founded with the motto "Recruit, Retain, and Graduate minority students majoring in engineering, math, or science." Initially, SHE was established independently from SHPE. Since then, the Society of Hispanic Engineers has grown exponentially, and in 1988 became a recognized chapter of SHPE.

In 1990 and 1998, SHE was recognized as the SHPE Region IV Chapter of the Year for our excellent work in assisting Hispanic communities develop young engineers. In 2000, SHE was selected out of 21 organizations that best promotes Latino issues and encourages awareness of the Latino culture at Rutgers University. In 2001, SHE was recipient of the Engineer Governing Council's "Cultural Organization of the Year". In 2002, the Latino Student Council honored out high school outreach program, Shadow Program, with the "Program of the Year" award. In 2004, SHE was recognized as the SHPE Region IV Chapter Development of the Year. In 2006, SHE was named "Organization of the Year" by the Latino Student Council, for its active involvement in the university community by providing academic, professional, and community service to the Hispanic community. SHE was also named, by SHPE, Medium Chapter of the Year and Regional Chapter of the Year in 2006. Most recently, SHE was award as the Most Outstanding Chapter Region IV at the SHPE Conference 2007.

SHE is a great organization that is devoted to the contribution of success of Latinos and other minorities in engineering and other fields of study. Today, our currents membership consists of over 70 students representing a variety of engineering and science disciplines, including numerous non-Hispanic and non-engineering students. The SHE Family, as we call ourselves, welcomes everyone to join us at our weekly meetings.
